transformation success interview Jun 22, 2017
It's always nice to see someone just light up their transformation right from the start. What I have discovered though is that there is always a little bit more behind these people that seem to be "overnight success stories".....and the story we are telling this week was a year and a half in the making.
Nick Bragin has 100% been on FIRE with his transformation. He is one of the most coachable clients that I've had in recent memory but it took him a year and a half to get his WHY, his motivation, and his mindset all aligned in order to get to that place where he was ready for action.
Listen to my interview with Nick where we discuss:
Once you check out the interview take a peek at my key takeaway notes below!
#1. Random health and fitness actions will lead to random health and fitness results. Nick talked about putting in a lot of time at the gym but not really having a set plan of action to work from. This combined with poor nutrition led to a lot of frustration for him. This is the point where many people try to justify the situation and start to feel sorry for themselves with mental talk like "I'm working so HARD and I'm not seeing any results.....poor me!!!!". All we need to do to fix this situation is start working from a plan so that we can analyze what is and isn't working for us so we can work hard and smart at the same time.
#2. Bring your WHY to the table right from the start. Nick mentioned that he was able to start getting a lot more focused and serious about his fitness when he spent some time thinking about his WHY and why he wanted to accomplish his goals. If you can establish your WHY early on in your transformation it will really speed up the process. I think that we all know the difference in our mindset and action when we are saving money for a specific purpose versus just saving money randomly. We tend to really focus in and find ways to be more efficient and put more funds towards our goal when that motivator is there. It is the same with our health and fitness!
#3. Surrender your pride and trust that your coach is there to help you. Nick has been 100% on board with the program we put together for him from the start. Unfortunately this isn't a super common thing. Most people will argue about what they think they should be able to eat or not send in their accountability reports like we ask them to do. Nick has just gave in to our process and accepted the coaching with an open mind. We all have to realize that the fastest way to achieve a new goal is to find someone that has already done it and allow them to show you the process.
#4. When facing tough social situations (involving food) lean on the fundamentals of your plan and take pride in the transformation process that you are putting a lot of effort into. Nick talked about staying focused so that one moment doesn't derail all of the hard work and focus that you are putting into the overall transformation that you are a part of. Nick does a great job of staying focused under pressure. If any of you are involved in our Defeat The Cheat Facebook group you will know that Nick posts/comments quite often and he likes to celebrate his WINS along the way when he crushes a challenge with a tempting situation.
#5. Establish some accountability anchor points. Nick just briefly talked about this but this is a gold nugget tip! We all need to create multiple forms of accountability for ourselves, especially as we are just getting started. We can do things like share our goals with family/friends, meet up with friends for workouts, join an awesome Facebook group, do online challenges, etc. I view accountability just like climbing a mountain. We need to establish as many anchor points as possible as we climb so that if we do slip we don't fall all the way to the bottom.
#6. At some point we all have to learn how to deal with an injury. If you exercise for long enough there is a good chance that something will happen. There may be a moment where you get a little lazy with your warm up and then you tweak a hamstring or strain your back a bit. Things like this happen and it is important to not freak out. Remember that our transformation journey will be full of surprises and we can learn and get better with each obstacle.
#7. Keep recalibrating your goals so that you are always motivated to achieve something new. Nick has done a really nice job of setting a variety of goals for himself and he includes lots of non scale/weight loss based goals. It is a huge potential danger zone if you are ultra focused on one big weight loss goal with nothing else to motivate you. What happens when you run out of weight to lose?
#8. We all need to periodically think about this question: "Am I just DOING something or am I actually ACCOMPLISHING something?". It is really easy to just join a gym or fitness program and "do something" but for you to see results there will need to be some random luck involved. The harder path is to choose to work from a plan, rely on an expert or a coach to guide you through a process, and remain consistent with the fundamentals of your transformation battle plan so that you can actually accomplish something.
